A bot for your Telegram channel: how it works and what it can do

How a Telegram channel bot works: creating it in BotFather, granting rights, publishing posts, token security and common errors.

Short answer

A Telegram bot is a service account controlled by a program. Create it in @BotFather, add it to the channel as an administrator with the “Post messages” right, and it can publish content through the Bot API.

A bot is a Telegram service account controlled by software. For a channel it works as an administrator: it publishes posts, accepts requests and sends notifications. Scheduling services use bots to publish on behalf of the channel.

How a bot is connected to a channel

A bot is not “linked” to a channel by itself. You add it as an administrator and grant the publishing right. Then a program with the bot token sends messages to the channel through the Bot API.

Create a bot and grant rights

  1. Open @BotFather, send /newbot and choose a name.
  2. Copy the token. It is the bot's password — never share it.
  3. Add the bot to the channel: Administrators → Add administrator.
  4. Enable the “Post messages” right. Reading statistics may require additional rights.
  5. Connect the token and the channel's @username in your scheduler.

What a bot can do

  • Publish text, photos, videos and albums on a schedule.
  • Send notifications and service messages.
  • Accept commands and requests when a handler is implemented.
  • Show buttons and links inside messages.

Token security

  • The token gives full access to the bot. Never put it in posts or screenshots.
  • If it leaks, revoke it in BotFather and issue a new one; the old token stops working immediately.
  • One bot can serve several channels, but grant rights only where needed.
  • Enable two-factor authentication on the account that owns the BotFather bot.

Common errors

  • “Chat not found” — the bot is not in the channel, or the @username is wrong.
  • “Not enough rights” — the publishing permission is missing.
  • The bot is blocked — check whether it was removed from administrators.
  • The post went to the wrong place — channels were mixed up in the scheduler. Check the @username before queuing.

Frequently asked

Does every channel need its own bot?

No. One bot can be an administrator in several channels. The scheduler connects each channel separately, but the token can be the same.

Can a bot publish without administrator rights?

No. The bot must be a channel administrator with the “Post messages” permission, otherwise Telegram returns a rights error.

What happens if someone else gets the token?

They get access to the bot: they can publish and read updates. Revoke the token in BotFather immediately and review the channel administrators.
