VK wall.post: publishing a post through the API for beginners

A beginner guide to VK wall.post: token permissions, owner_id, from_group, publish_date, media attachments and common errors.

Short answer

The VK wall.post method publishes to a community or user wall. Use an access token with wall and manage rights, a negative owner_id for a community, from_group=1, and publish_date in Unix time for scheduled posts.

wall.post is a VK API method that creates a post on a community or user wall. For a community you need an administrator token, a negative owner_id and from_group=1; for a scheduled post, add publish_date in Unix time.

What you need

  • A VK ID application and an access_token with post-management rights (wall, manage).
  • The community's numeric owner_id with a minus sign, for example -123456789.
  • A fixed API version v, so behaviour does not change unexpectedly.
  • Post text; optionally attachments with photos or a link.

A minimal request

POST https://api.vk.com/method/wall.post
owner_id=-123456789
from_group=1
message=Your post text
access_token=YOUR_TOKEN
v=5.199

The token and text are URL-encoded. Never keep a real token in public code: it grants access to the community.

Scheduled publication

Add publish_date — the publication time in Unix seconds. The service calling the API must keep the queue and send the request at the right moment, or pass the time to VK when the method supports scheduling for your post type.

publish_date=1760000000
# example: 2026-10-09 12:53 UTC — use your own time

Check the time zone: Unix time is absolute, but the date shown in your interface depends on the zone.

Media and links

Photos and videos are uploaded first, then passed in attachments as photo123_456 or video123_456. A link can be attached as https://…; VK builds a snippet if the community settings allow it.

Common errors

  • Invalid access_token — the token was revoked or issued without the required rights.
  • Access denied — the user is not a community administrator.
  • Owner_id without a minus — the post goes to the user's wall instead of the community.
  • Flood control — too many requests; add a pause and a queue.
  • Media error — the file was not uploaded or attachments was assembled incorrectly.

Token security

  • Never commit a token to a repository or print it in logs.
  • Keep it in environment variables or a secret manager.
  • If it leaks, revoke it and issue a new one; review the community administrators.

Frequently asked

Which owner_id should I use for a community?

The community's numeric ID with a minus sign, for example -123456789. A user wall does not need the minus.

How do I schedule a post with wall.post?

Pass publish_date as Unix time in seconds. The service calling the method must keep the queue and retry failed requests.

Why does VK return Access denied?

Most often the token does not belong to a community administrator or lacks wall/manage rights. Check the permissions and issue a new token.
