Telegram channel description: how to write one that converts

How to write a Telegram channel description: a five-part formula, real examples, keyword use and the mistakes that cost subscribers.

Short answer

A channel description is a mini landing page: say what you publish, for whom, the result, one proof point and the next step. Keep the key message in the first two lines — that is all most visitors see.

A Telegram channel description is not a biography. It is a mini landing page that people read in the channel header and in search results. The first two lines must explain the value before anyone taps “more”.

What a visitor sees

The description sits under the channel name. The full text opens on tap, but only the first two lines are visible immediately. Telegram search also uses the name and description, so vague phrases such as “a useful channel about life” do not help anyone find you by topic.

A five-part formula

  1. What you publish. A concrete topic: contract reviews, portrait shoots, flower delivery.
  2. For whom. The audience and situation: freelance lawyers, parents of schoolchildren, small businesses.
  3. The result. What the reader gets: fewer contract revisions, available shoot dates, a week of post ideas.
  4. Why trust you. Experience, a case or a number — briefly, without boasting.
  5. The next step. Subscribe, message a keyword, check the pinned post or visit the website.

Examples

Dental clinic: “Helping adults keep their teeth without fear: treatment, prices and prevention explained. Message ‘consultation’ and we will suggest the next step.”

Photographer: “Portraits, families and brands in Manchester. Behind-the-scenes stories and open dates. Booking details are in the pinned post.”

Online school: “Learn to run ads without an agency: short lessons, account reviews and templates. Start with the free lesson in the pinned post.”

Keywords without stuffing

  • Put the main keyword in the channel name, not only in the description.
  • One or two natural mentions in the description are enough: “contract lawyer”, “apartment renovation”.
  • Do not list every city and service separated by commas. That reads like a catalogue, not an offer.
  • Check how the channel is found by name and topic from another account.

Common mistakes

  • “Everything about everything”. The visitor cannot tell why they should subscribe now.
  • No next step. The text ends with “welcome” and the reader leaves.
  • Too many emoji. They eat the first lines and make the text harder to scan.
  • Stale promises. “Daily posts” when you publish twice a month destroys trust.
  • No link to the pinned post. The description and the pin should lead to the same action.

How often to update it

Review the description every quarter and whenever the offer changes. If your services, prices or audience change, rewrite it. Do not change the channel name without a rebrand: that is how people find you.

Frequently asked

How many characters fit in a Telegram channel description?

A practical limit is about 255 characters, though the exact limit depends on the client. Put the meaning in the first two lines, which are visible without expanding.

Does the description affect Telegram search?

Yes, the channel name and description are used in search. Repeat the main topic in the name and mention it once, naturally, in the description.

Can I change the description often?

You can, but avoid abrupt changes: people get used to a promise. Update it when the offer changes or once a quarter; change the name only for a rebrand.
