VK cover and avatar sizes: a practical design guide
VK avatar and cover sizes, safe zones and a design checklist. How to upload images so the text and logo survive mobile cropping.
Use a 400×400 square avatar and a 1590×400 cover as a starting point, keep the message inside the central safe zone, and always check the mobile preview — VK crops the edges.
The avatar and cover are the shop window of a VK community. Visitors decide in seconds whether to open the community or scroll past. Sizes matter because a bad crop can cut off the logo and the offer.
Avatar
- Start with a 400×400 px square; VK displays it as a circle, so keep important elements near the centre.
- Use a logo or a face at a large scale. Tiny text disappears in the feed.
- Check readability on both light and dark backgrounds: different clients use different frames.
- Do not stretch a rectangle. Crop to a square and leave some breathing room.
Cover
- The desktop starting point is 1590×400 px; check the current requirements in the community editor.
- Mobile crops the edges. Keep the message and the offer in the central safe zone.
- One idea per cover: “September bookings”, “delivery in 60 minutes”, “free audit”. Do not squeeze in a price list and every service.
- Contrast matters more than decoration: the text must read on a small screen.
How to upload
- Open the community → Management → Cover.
- Upload the image and check the mobile preview.
- Save and open the community on a phone. That is the only reliable crop test.
Design checklist
- The avatar reads at a small size and does not blend into the background.
- The cover has one offer and one next step.
- No text is cut off on a phone.
- Colours and fonts match the website and other social profiles.
- The community name contains a keyword and reads cleanly without symbols.
Common mistakes
- Small text on the cover. On a phone it turns into stripes.
- The logo at the edge of the avatar. The circular mask cuts the corners.
- Changing images too often. People stop recognising the community. Change the cover for a season or offer; change the avatar for a rebrand.
- A cover without a message. A beautiful image without an offer does not explain why someone should subscribe.

Frequently asked
What size should a VK cover be?
Start with 1590×400 px, but check the preview in the editor because VK may change the crop. Keep the message in the central safe zone.
Why is the cover cropped on a phone?
The mobile version shows a narrower area. Important text and the logo should not sit near the edges.
How often should I change the avatar and cover?
Change the cover when the offer or season changes, and the avatar for a rebrand. Frequent changes hurt recognition.
